Happy New Year !!!!!

Happy New Year!!!!  Goodbye 2005,  hello 2006.  

WHAT? ANOTHER BIRTHDAY? wow

I think I just had the nicest birthdays I have had in many a year…It was so much fun.  My daughter and her husband came in from Plano, my son and his friend, my granddaughter and her friend, and my other grandson.  My only sadness was my oldest grandson and his wife couldn’t be here.  He is a little busy defending our country, and his wife is learning how to be a nurse!  

Aren’t birthdays fun?  Even if you do get a year older.  For some of us, that is pretty nice. Well, This is just a short comment tonight, as I am tired, and and I am heading for bed.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!

Today is my granddaughter Holly’s birthday. She is sure busy, cause you can’t get her on the phone to say Happy Birthday!  She is married to my Grandson Greg, who is in the Army, in Qatar.  This has to be a lonely time for both, but today, Holly in particular.  She is having company, and I know she loves that!!!

Well, Holly, incase I don’t get you on the phone…”Happy Birthday dear Holly..Happy Birthday to you!”  Love you!   nn

MERRY CHRISTMAS ... MERRY CHRISTMAS

MERRY CHRISTMAS!  There, I said it, and I am glad.  What’s up with Happy Holidays?  I don’t mind saying Happy Holidays..but I would love to hear a Merry Christmas once in a while from people in Wal-mart, Target and anywhere I do business.  

Here is how you know they aren’t “allowed” to say Merry Christmas.

Walk into a store, find someone you want to say it to, (they have to work there) and in a wonderfully lilting tone, say  “MERRY CHRISTMAS”..look right at them while you say it.  Their eyes will lower, and then they mutter something like “same to you”..NOT Merry Christmas to you, “same to you”.  Hmmmmm  That means they are following store orders.

What do you do about it?  Just smile and say it again as you walk away.

I am too old to call Christmas something else.   This is the birthday of Jesus, and we are celebrating that event.  We have done this for years, and suddenly…it is not “POLICICALLY CORRECT”…. I am sick and tired of Political Correctness…who ever started that??????

Ok..I will say it AGAIN.  Pretend I am looking right into your eyes…with a smile on my face…

...Against all enemies, foreign and domestic...
I, do affirm that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.


Today, I signed on that dotted line again. I remain in the inventory of the United States Army for the next 5 years.But, Greg, that sure seems like a long time!Not really. I still had a year and a half left to go, and when I re-enlisted my original contract was voided. So in actuality, I re-enlisted for 3 and a half years from the date I was supposed to get out anyways, and I got the options that I wanted. It is a win-win situation.I know this will sound sappy and whatever, but who cares... I love the Army. I can not imagine a greater life than that of a Soldier. Just like every job - it has it's ups and downs, but I would not trade places with any civilian for anything. My country is still embattled in a global war on terror, and the coming years will prove to be some of the most difficult in our nation's history. We have to prove to these terrorists that we will not be bullied - that we will continue to fight them until this war has been won.For a while I had considered getting out of the Army. I possess attributes [dealing with my job - I am trying to leave that ambiguous] that could net good money in the civilian sector. If I leave the Army in a time of need, I am no better than the elected officials in this country who desire the immediate withdrawal of our forces from Iraq. That is to say - I choose not to cut and run.

I am in this for the long haul.I know some people in my family were concerned about my decision, even if they did not express it directly to me. I know you guys were concerned when I joined in the first place. I will say now, like I said then: I am a big boy now. Don't believe everything you read in the papers or see on the news. I believe with every bone in my body that what we are doing is right, and we will win this war. When that happens, I will probably get out of the Army. Until then, I will remain in the employ of Uncle Sam.

I also want to thank my wife, Holly, for being very supportive of my re-enlistment. I know the life of an Army spouse is difficult, and things have not and will not always be easy. But she is an incredibly special woman who has stuck with me through thick and thin. I have been away from home at least 50% of the time, even before we were married. I am the luckiest man alive, and I love her very much.
